Overall Reflections

Juliette:When the SPICE project first started, I felt really stressed. As the leader, I felt that it was my responsibility to ensure that everything was done properly and to the best that it can be. As a result, I was really worried about how our project would turn out and if we would be able to get everything done on time. I am happy to say that I think my group did a very good job. I’m really proud of our food models and our infographic board, and our project would not have had this outcome if it wasn’t for my group mates. They were always willing to help out with everything and they made an effort to do everything to the best of their abilities. Through this project, we had a lot of things to complete, and I learnt the importance of teamwork. We all had to come together, discuss our ideas and I had to learn how to take into account everybody’s ideas. We all had to listen to each other and work as a team, without help from anyone, we would not get anything done. Teamwork played an important role over these 4 weeks and I learnt how to work better with people. I also learned more about not only the Malay culture, but also the other cultures through the Mini Showcase, talks, workshops and modules. I learned different cultures’ traditions, food and beliefs. I understood more about the local food culture and how important it is to sustain it, thus leading to our project focusing on sustaining the traditional Malay food culture. I realised that I should be open to different ideas and advice on how to constantly improve to make our project even better, as there is always room for improvement. I learnt more about interviewing others, which will come in handy in the future, and how to interact with members of the public. When interviewing people, we had to deal with being rejected and turned down many times, but we had to have faith and not give up, continuing asking around for possible interviewees. This SPICE journey had its ups and downs, but it taught me many life skills that will stick with me forever.

Yixuan:Through this spice journey, I had learnt a lot of things. First of all, I learnt how to accept other people’s view. Everyone is different, and the will all have a different perspective of view, even of the same thing. If we are not able to accept different things, we will not be able to finish our work nd present the best piece. Therefore, It can be counted as one of the biggest things that I have learnt. Secondly, I learnt not to be stubborn nd listen to other people’s advice. Our group will not be able to get the best piece of work If we do not discuss and listen to others suggestions. At first of the spice journey, I am really stubborn and often not listening to others. But after this journey, I changed not to be so stubborn and started to learn and take in others suggestions. At first I didn’t expect SPICE to be a enjoyable journey as my first impression of it was just a boring project. But after it, I realized that not only did i learn a lot of things, but it also made our group more bonded. In the end, we do have a really good product and outlet group is very proud of it. This will definitely be one of our memorable event and I will never forget the time that I’m with my group!:)

Yuexin: Through this spice journey, I learnt about the importance of teamwork and perseverance. Because it wasn’t my first time working with the same group, I thought that cooperating well wasn’t a problem for us. However, as I got to know my classmates better, I found out more about their personalities and thoughts. Sometimes, we had light quarrels with each other, that caused annoyance in our group. As time goes by, I learnt to accept difference and put myself into the person’s shoes. I realised that I have to be more understanding and to think twice before acting. My first impressions of SPICE was that it was a piece of cake and that there was no importance in it. Why do we even have to do it? When piles of assignments got thrown at us, I woke up. It wasn’t that easy after all. I planned my time better and coped with the heavy task. In the end, I was rather proud of our project as we are mostly on time and on schedule. Other than the time management skills that we must have, we can’t give up easily on the work we have to do. Although sometimes our group feel like rushing through a task, we told ourselves that we have to be diligent and did everything to the best of our ability. I fond out that the SPICE could apply to us in our daily lives. The design-thinking process that were taught can help us when we are creating something or solving a problem. The SPICE journey was not just filled with assignments but fun as well! We had laughs together when we moulded our models. I also had fun during the cooking lessons when we made our Ondeh Ondeh. The process was exciting and the food was delicious too! During the assessment, we worked together really well and the end product was something we are proud of! The SPICE program had pulled us closer and I will definitely cherish the time we had together.

Sharlene:Before the start of this SPICE journey, I thought that this project was useless and a waste of time when we could have been doing better and more fun things in class. During the briefing of SPICE, I was overwhelmed by the number of things we had to complete within 4 weeks. However, as we went through the process of it, I felt like I was wrong to assume that it would be boring and impossible to complete. I realised that completing this task as a group would make the process less burdensome and more fun. The activities planned out for us were really enriching and I am so grateful to be able to learn more about other cultures, especially the Malay culture as it was the group that was assigned to us. I have always been a fan of Malay food but this project made me fall in love more with Malay food. My favourite part of this journey would be when we went to Geylang Serai. We got to see so many different types of traditional costumes and sights that were breathtaking! We were also fed with free food! The curry puffs and roti prata were delicious! The talks during this SPICE journey were also engaging and I not only learnt more about cultures, but also the art of interviewing, architecture and many other things! I enjoyed the sharing sessions very much. One of my favourite workshops was also the ondeh ondeh workshop. It was my first time trying it and furthermore, making ondeh ondeh. I was super excited as I am very open to experiencing new things. I was focused on making the ondeh ondeh so that it would taste perfect. True enough, my ondeh ondeh were delicious! In conclusion, I am grateful to have experienced this journey as I am definitely more educated about the races around me.

Vera: During the SPICE journey, I was able to learn more about the different cultures and traditions in Singapore. Singapore isn’t a multiracial country and all the races live together harmoniously as we all accept one another. Like many others, I was rather shocked by the things on our to-do list. However, our group worked together and completed it. The food maidens we made were very realistic. My group mates even used a hot glue gun to squirt a bit of glue on the side of the chendol, making it look like the shaved ice was melting and there was a water droplet! At our trip to Geylang Serai, our guide brought us through the beautiful streets and explained the history of some roads like Joo Chiat Road. We were also brought to a Nonya kueh shop and we were given free curry puff and kueh lapis. They were absolutely delicious and I bought a packet of ondeh ondeh as I love the sweet gula meleka and the coconut bits. Actually, we made ondeh ondeh during one of the workshops in school! It was very fun and we managed to make nice, round and sweet ondeh. The talks given by guests who were invited to the school were very useful to help us understand the different cultures and their traditions better. I feel very privileged and delighted to be able to work with my understanding group mates. In a nutshell, I feel that this learning journey I had was very enriching and I hope that everybody enjoyed it as much as I do. Thank you for reading!
