14 May 2019:
Yuexin: For Mr Ivan Yeo’s talk, I learnt that we should embrace our heritage. We should get to know where we come from and know our culture and forefathers. Mr Yeo understood where he came from and his dialect group. He then expanded on his dialect group to recreate Teochew dishes and establish a restaurant, a brewery to be exact. He made his own beer and named them after his grandfather, leaving him with a remembrance of him. After listening to him, I learnt that we learnt to be proud of whatever race and culture we are.
Juliette: Mr Ivan Yeo: After listening to his talk, I learnt that it is important to know your roots and family past, so that you can learn more about your family history and find out more about your own self. Mr Yeo held on to his culture, not wanting the Teochew tradition to be forgotten. He opened a restaurant serving beer and Teochew food, adding his own modern touches to the dishes. We should all trace back our own roots as nowadays, as we tend to forget where we came from, this helps our cultures’ traditions to not be forgotten.
Yixuan: Mr Ivan Yeo; after listening to his talk, I learnt how important food heritage is to our life. Without people like Mr Ivan Yeo, our food heritage might not be passed down then. We should know our roots and eat more traditional food.
Vera: Mr Ivan Yeo: Food heritage is very important to our Singapore culture and we must not forget it. We should all eat more traditional food so as to keep the food heritage alive. If not enough people eat the food, it might go away as it will be not popular.
Sharlene: Through Mr Ivan Yeo’s talk, I’ve learnt the importance of our cultural food heritage and knowing more about our roots as it is a family tradition. In his talk, he shared with us that in the past, he was drifting away from his own cultural food and was focusing mainly on western food until he realised that it was more important to focus on his roots and his own cultural traditional food. He shared about how he is doing his part of keeping the cultural food heritage by touching up the cultural food with a bit of western and modern style. He owns a brewery and food shop named after his grandfather.

Yuexin: For Mr Patrick Yeo’s talk, we learnt more about the Malays and their culture. This definitely benefited us a lot as we understood the insight of the Malay heritage. One thing I gained from the talk is about the Malay Wedding. As I’ve never gone to one before, this gave me an idea of what happens in one.
Juliette: Mr Patrick Yeo: I benefited a lot from his talk. He gave us many details about the different aspects of the Malay culture, like the food, clothing and games. It was very informative and it definitely helped me understand much more about the Malay culture. He also gave good tips on how to serve Malay guests in your house while respecting their traditions (e.g. halal food, use plastic utensils).
Yixuan: Mr Patrick Yeo:I learnt a lot about Geylang Serai from Mr Patrick Yeo’s talk. From his talk, I learnt a lot about Malay culture, tradition and heritage too. Without his talk, I am not able to get a better understanding of how Malay is different from others and how unique it is.
Vera: Mr Patrick Yeo: Through his talk, i better understood the Malay culture and all its traditions, like the traditional Malay wedding. I also learnt more about Geylang Serai and the different Malay food. I understood that when we invite our Muslim friends to our house, we must cater halal food and not use our own utensils as it has probably has touched pork.
Sharlene: Mr Patrick Yeo’s talk enlightened me on the Malay culture. Through his talk, I have learnt many new terms for the Malay cultural things like how the traditional clothes for women is called “baju kurung”. One thing I have gained from this talk is interesting facts about Geylang Serai. In the past. I have never been to Geylang Serai. However, after his talk, I was able to know more about it.

Yuexin: We learnt more about the production of videos and how to interview members of the public successfully. The advice given by the professionals are indeed helpful and I know that they will come in handy during the interview in Geylang Serai. Not only did they talk about video production, they showed us really helpful examples that we can follow.
Juliette: We learnt the art of interviews and we even got to watch two videos with interviews inside of them! One piece of advice given by the professionals which I will always remember when conducting interviews is to interview someone who has an interesting story to tell. This will make our interviews more interesting as they can give unique answers that are different from the rest.
Vera: We learnt a lot from this talk. I learnt how to perform a good interview and how to ask the interviewee questions that would be relevant. I also learnt the different tones and different formalities to use when talking to different people. Also, we learnt how to properly edit and film a video.
Yixuan: We learnt a lot about the skills of interviewing and we even watched two videos about them interviewing others. We also learnt the ways of editing the video.
Sharlene: Through this talk, I’ve learnt more about how to interview people professionally. The speakers were so kind to let us watch 2 videos to let us know more about interviews and how they workjed, which was my favourite part of the talk. During the QnA session, they told us that interviewing the person who you find the most interesting was a way to make your interviews more interesting. I’ve also learnt how to edit and film a video which is important as I was the cameraman.

16 May 2019:
Yuexin: Today, we had two architects who visited us. One of them have come to our school once to give a talk about the Chinese children’s storybook that he have written. Something special about them is that they aren’t just architects, they are architects who conserve old buildings filled with history and heritage. Therefore, their talk was about what type of buildings should be conserved and how the building can serve a meaningful purpose for the modern people.
Juliette: The speakers today talked about conserving old buildings. One of them published three books of his own, and he captures the scenery of old buildings that are uncommon in Singapore today. The other speaker talked about the process and criteria of conserving buildings. This two talks made me realise how important buildings play in a community as they have stories of their own too, and they all have very different designs. They also mean a lot to people who visited them often, giving them a sense of nostalgia whenever they see the building.
Vera: After the talk, I learnt that the buildings around us all have historical meaning. We should all do our part to maintain and conserve these beautiful buildings. It is very important that we do not forget our heritage and the histories of the buildings. We have to ensure that these historical buildings will still be around for future generations so that they will be educated about our rich history and heritage.
Yixuan: From their talk, I learnt the importance of Singapore heritage and culture, as well as how heritage can affect Singaporeans life. I do really want to preserve all the heritage, but I think it is still a very big challenge.
Sharlene: The speakers today educated us on the importance of building conservation. Building conservation is important as many people have many fond memories in places that they hold dearly to their hearts. I’ve learnt that we should be more appreciative with the buildings we have around us and not to take them for granted as one day, it will probably be teared down.
